It’s more important than ever to consider the impact we have on the earth, and here at Identity Agency we are taking steps to become more sustainable as a business – that’s where My Square Metre comes in. We are proud to be partnering with this local business to sponsor the creation of a pond here in Lincolnshire as well as planting some wildflowers in the My Square Metre meadow.

Why Wildflowers?

You might be thinking, why don’t you plant trees to offset your carbon? Well, it’s because the UK’s wildflowers have been depleted massively over the past few decades, and a lot of species rely on them for food and shelter. Trees are great too of course, but wildflowers grow faster and their carbon-capturing abilities come into effect more quickly. The wildflower meadows that are planted by My Square Metre are protected for 30 years, after which the meadow is fully rewilded and doesn’t need any human intervention. Each square metre of wildflowers provides food for life for over 20 bees plus countless other pollinators and other wildlife. Each square metre can offset 3kg of carbon dioxide and help to improve soil health.

Why Create a Pond?

Ponds can provide an essential habitat for amphibious and water-dwelling wildlife such as frogs and newts, as well as a water source for all species. Ponds also offer nesting sites for birds and a unique location for wildflowers and plants that thrive in damp locations. Much like wildflower meadows, the UK used to have a lot more ponds, but many have been destroyed due to drainage, infilling and urban development. Lots of endangered species rely on ponds for food and habitat, including the great crested newt. Much like the wildflower meadows, My Square Metre will be carefully maintaining the pond to keep it clean and make sure the resident species are thriving.

Why this is Important

We are living in unprecedented times where the climate is noticeably changing – global warming is no longer a distant prospect but one we can see having significant effects in our lifetime. We can’t pretend it’s not happening nor leave it to others to fix – it is our responsibility to do what we can to reduce our impact on the planet and try and leave it in a better state than we found it. In our own small way, we hope to offset our business activities and improve the biodiversity of the UK that has been lost in recent years by partnering with My Square Metre.

We will be posting updates on our wildflower planting and the pond so keep following us for that – if you want some help offsetting your own carbon footprint or meeting your sustainability goals, get in touch with My Square Metre.
